How did you first meet Normani?
She held out her hand. VIP is well known in the New Orleans area, of course, but also in different cities. I have different fan bases. People contact me when they try to do things with their hair until they grow it, I’m a specialist like that. Her mom contacted me because she was having some issues, I believe her lace front thinned out a section. She tried the products, loved them, and grew her hair back. She was in town and wanted me to take a look at her hair in general, I did and we’ve been bonded ever since. She is one of the sweetest, most amazing people.
How were you able to respond to what she wanted?
I am a specialist in my field. I’m still sharing, let me do a consultation first, take a look at what we’re potentially working with. I ask them what their goal is. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a celebrity or a permanent customer. I always want to know what their overall goal is. What they are trying to achieve. I like to know their hair history. Tell me what’s going on, tell me what happened, tell me what caused it. What timeframe? How long has it been since it’s been like this? From there, I always come up with a plan, a call to action on how we’re going to achieve their overall goals.
Of course, style is everything. We want to be beautiful. When your hair is not in these styles to be fixed or pressed, the main goal is to always be healthy. How would you have your hair in a updo style, beautiful and healthy, whether you got a hair color etc. I always ask what is the overall goal you want to achieve with your hair? Then I organize a plan which is a one month goal, a 3 month goal, a 6 month goal, and then a 12 month goal. Make sure we meet their needs on time while staying on track with those goals.
What did it mean to style Normani in the “Wild Side” video?
It was an amazing experience. I was part of the team. Yusef, he had finished creating the entire look. He is a genius in the conception of his looks. Getting together with everyone, such a great experience. Definitely, a team effort, in total a team of 3 to 4 because there were so many looks with all the girls. Every time she makes a video or presses that big scale. It is always an experience. It really feels like a family.
You had 40 minutes to change your hair into braids. Was it stressful?
Previous work she did for Ivy Park. We do some extra looks before that. When we do a shoot day, it’s 4 different sets that she shoots for and Ivy Park was the last one. This look, she wanted to do braids so we literally had to pull out the other style. We were trying to beat the sun because it was getting dark. She looks at the time and says “I think I really want braids for this look, how long will that take?” I told him.
She said, “Do you think we can do it in 35, 40 minutes?” I said, “We have to try to make this happen.” [laughs] It was right up to the minute. Just when the time came, I was finishing the last part. Lawd, I don’t know how it came about but I’m glad it was. The look was really good, it was really pissed off because Beyonce had the same outfit for her look for the Ivy Park commercial. She wanted to give him something a little different and more edgy with the braids. We were able to achieve it.
What are the fall hair trends?
Bangs are hot right now, bangs will definitely come back. Really, really layered haircuts because for a while you remember the Farrah Fawcett trends? The 70s haircut that everyone was doing? Since then, many people have fallen in love with layering their hair. Lots of layers, lots of bodies are making a comeback and that hasn’t been a trend for a while. We have to do bangs.
Some fall colors that we have to look for, lots of copper of course. The funny thing right now is that people are doing whatever makes them happy. Do you know how blond is sometimes a summer color? It is no longer a thing. You can do what you want when you want. Blondes all fall, all winter, because people used to sink in those seasons and that’s not even a thing anymore. Some of the trends I see will definitely be bangs, definitely a lot of body and layers. You’re going to see people getting extensions for really really long hair. You can already see it, or even the short hair. Fun stuff!
How important are vitamins for hair?
Let me tell you that hair vitamins can be a game changer for a lot of people. We went out with our Greaux hair vitamins earlier this year and they were a mega-hit. Most people are deficient in vitamins to some extent and they don’t even realize it. Adding a supplement to your daily routine, whether for health and wellness, but certainly for hair, can be a game-changer. In California, many are suspicious of their eating habits and diet. But, in most of the United States, we eat a lot of garbage. You’re not getting your daily nutrient intake, so using a supplement to make up for that makes a big difference.
For example, if you are suffering from vitamin D deficiency, vitamin A deficiency, or iron deficiency, it is not found in your food. This is a normal level and you are here [points down], you are not getting the nutrition from your food – at least if you take a supplement, be sure to drink water, it can bring your levels to where the normal norm should be. When you lack vitamins and have a deficiency, it causes hair loss. It causes premature aging, brittle nails, stiffness in the body. It causes so much and people don’t know it. When they see their hair falling out or thinning, they say things like “Oh, maybe I used the wrong shampoo”. Or “maybe it’s because I’m getting old.” They don’t even think, “Hey, maybe this is something I’m not doing.” That I lack nutrition so I have to add this supplement. I tell people it can’t hurt, but it sure can help. So go ahead!
What advice would you give to future entrepreneurs?
Go ahead, follow your passion. Always make sure you are passionate and get good at what you do. Many start for the wrong reasons and eventually you will lose the passion. Give it your all, make sure you are a professional in your particular career or whatever niche you start your business in, great customer service, focus on that, the money will follow you. Customers are going to follow, you are going to be seen because people are drawn to individuals now. People will see your passion, they will see your enthusiasm for what you do, and they will want to support you.
I say to young entrepreneurs or all entrepreneurs, to anyone trying to get into the entrepreneurial field, make sure you have done your research, that you are passionate and that you are putting in quality. Customer service is something I always love to be proud of, making sure you are transparent with people. If they have any questions, be sure to answer them. Dark. 2021 is about to go full steam ahead. Go ahead, you don’t want to turn 90 and say; “I could have, I could have, I should have. Some people may not begin their journey in their young life. Some people may start their entrepreneurial journey in their 30s, 40s, or even 50s. As long as you have breath in your body, go for it, because you don’t know how long you will live.
I remember reading this case study. I was 21, but it always marked me about the KFC man. When he came up with the formula for KFC, he continually turned down loans to fund and start KFC. He started in his twenties. He finally found an investor at 65. From the age of 20, it’s crazy. Most people would definitely have given up. He continued to do it on a small scale and once he finally got that investment it exploded at the KFC as we know it now. He passed away years later, so he was able to enjoy the fruits of his labor for a short time. KFC is a global company, it is present in all regions of the world.
His children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, everyone was able to eat and succeed because he never gave up on his dream. He followed them and held on to them. He believed in himself. He continued to make sure the quality was what he wanted it to be and finally he made his voice heard. He stood out and he became what it was. There are many similar companies. Alongside the CEO of Amazon and his story, there are countless. Do not measure your success with that of someone else, as some people ‘s overnight success can take 20 years. Someone’s overnight success can be a week-long process. In the age of social networks. Get out and go.
